Cocoa
Born: Spring 2004
Cocoa is one of our newest members, having joined us in late February 2006. She was originally my grandmother's cat, but my grandma became too ill to care for such a young, active kitty so she asked Dan and I to take care of her. She knew that Cocoa would have a good home with us! When my grandmother passed away less than a month later, we inherited her other kitty, Princess, making Cocoa no longer the newbie. All of our kitties have a story, and Cocoa is no exception. She was adopted from the Young County Humane Society in May of 2005 as a thin and scarred little girl. But even at an undernourished 6 pounds and with still-open scars from surgery to remove a flea collar that had grown into her skin, she was a very lovey and sweet girl. The scars from the flea collar were angry, obvious and still healing when we first saw Cocoa. The worker at the Humane Society told us that a flea collar had grown into her skin around her neck, chest, back and behind one leg (she had managed to get a front leg through the collar when she was smaller and that is how it grew into her skin as she got bigger). Apparently the collar had been put on her when she was very small and never removed. Fortunately, Cocoa had been found by a semi-retired doctor who surgically removed the collar. With such a hard luck story, you know I was instant butter when I saw Cocoa. My grandmother had more of a mind to get a kitten, but she ultimately picked Cocoa so that I wouldn't have to explain to Dan how I went to Graham to work for a day and came home with another cat. And Cocoa rewarded her with lots of love and attention. Cocoa is still acclimating to our home but things are going very well. She can't decide if she likes all the other kitties yet, but I have seen her licking on Gidget, so there is definite progress!
